Music Project Assignment

In this project you will make wiki pages for a musical artist or musical group..

We will spend the first day learning how to make wikipages. You will create a new page which links from this home page. In this way, you will design your own wikispace.

You will have class time to work on the assignment.

America has a distinctive music style. Through the decades, musical tastes have gone from ragtime to jazz to blues; swing to boogie-woogie; rock and roll to acid rock and new wave. Different musical groups put their unique stamps on these varied musical types.
Your task is to select a musical group or performer which interests you. Create a Wiki Page which highlights the important information about that musical group or performer. You should include information, including pictures, music videos, and songs about the following areas: (You may present this all on one wiki page or you may create separate wiki pages for each section.)

u Biography: information about the individual members of the group: names of group members, biographical facts and statistics.

u Discography: titles of important albums and #1 hit singles; awards; include years of release and years awards given.

uCharacteristics of the musical style: genre, lyrics, musicality.

Genre: What is the type of music? (pop, hard rock, rap, etc.) What is the origin of the genre?
Lyrics: What do the lyrics say? What is the artist’s purpose in writing the lyrics? Do the lyrics contain a message?
Musicality: What is the rhythm (beat), tempo (fast or slow), harmony (lead singer, backup, altos, sopranos, etc.)
and timbre (sound of the instruments) of the music?
In this selection, use a song that is representative of the group or artist. Include the song title, year of release, and explanation of what the song is about. If possible, include a link to the song lyrics and to the song itself. Include personal comments: What is your reaction to this song? Why do you enjoy listening to it?

u Critical evaluation of the musical group or performer: convention, artistry, production. Convention: What are the basic structural patterns (verses, bridges, chorus, etc.) of the song?
Artistry: How expressive are the artist’s lyrics? Do the moods and styles of the songs vary? Has the artist used
a wide range of instruments?
Production: Is the overall sound and feel of the music pleasurable? Can you hear all of the instruments clearly?
Is the mix of instrument and vocal volume effective?

Also in this section, answer: Do you think this music has staying power? Explain.

u Explanation of why you like the musical group/artist.

u List of Music web sites you used in preparing this presentation; include a brief description of the site and the special features of the site.
Remember to put all the information you find from your research into your own words. Failure to do so is plagiarism.

To prepare to write this report, you should read Chapter 5: Recordings, pp. 88-105, in your text, Media Impact.

Hints:
  1. Find photos, videos, and songs (you can use the embed feature or copy and paste lfeature to upload photos). REMEMBER TO PROVIDE LINKS TO THE PHOTOS YOU UPLOAD OR USE IN THE "SOURCES" AREA!
  2. When inserting photos, include captions with the name of the musical group or artist--then it shows up automatically.
  3. Arrange page to make organized, even, balanced, etc.
  4. Edit your writing for grammar, spelling, usage, diction. Remember, this is for your English class.
